STS-134 MCC Status Report #14

HOUSTON – The space shuttle Endeavour crew gets some down time today. After several days of extensive robotics, installation of new hardware and two spacewalks, the crew will have mostly off-duty time. Meanwhile, three space station crew members prepare to come home. The shuttle crew and Expedition 27 Flight Engineer Ron Garan woke at 9 p.m. to the song “Times Like These” by the Foo Fighters for Mission Specialist Andrew Feustel.

Shortly after wake up, shuttle Commander Mark Kelly and Flight Engineer Mike Fincke will participate in an education event with Mesa Verde Elementary School in Tucson, Arizona. The event will take place at 9:45 p.m. and feature questions from the students.

During the broadcast, viewers will be able to see both the astronauts and the students. Approximately 400 kindergarten through fifth grade students will participate in the event. Astronaut Lee Morin also will be at the school answering questions. He flew on space shuttle Atlantis’ STS-110 mission in 2002, performing two spacewalks during which the station’s robotic arm was used for the first time to maneuver spacewalkers around the station.

Later in the day, Mission Specialist Roberto Vittori will join Expedition 27 Flight Engineer and fellow Italian Paolo Nespoli for a special call from Giorgio Napolitano, the President of the Italian Republic. The call will take place from Rome, Italy at 8:31 a.m.

The Expedition 27 crew will wake at 6:31 a.m. and prepare for the departure of three of its crew members. Dmitry Kondratyev, Nespoli and Cady Coleman are wrapping up their long duration stay and will close the hatches on their Soyuz return craft at 1:21 p.m. and undock from the station at 4:35 p.m. Landing is expected to occur at 9:26 p.m.
